Lee and Scot are bang on. If, when you ask yourself what the kayak's use will be, if you say "just calm water use with little chance of being the rescue boat", and thus tempted go with just epoxy and varnish, consider 2oz fiberglass at least. It adds very little weight, fills quickly and adds a great deal to deter water infiltration/cracking etc.

If you decide to use 2oz, remember the weave is like silk and your epoxy should be quite thin during wet-out to ensure even penetration through to the deck's wood with no white areas.

From my 1 year of paddling, I've learned that you'll bang your beauty up much more than you'd imagine.
