Unless you have very long wood and don't need scarf joints, you do need to leave "extra" for the scarf joint or your boat will be short. You only need to leave the "extra" on one piece as the joints overlap. How much you leave is a function of the thickness of the wood, i.e. how much "overlap" you need for the joint.

I let the front piece be as long as the wood and marked on the pattern where the edge was. Then the new edge does need to be inset from the edge of the wood as needed for the joint.
