hatch vs drain hole

I really enjoyed the photos of Chequerboard's beautiful bow. I am now considering not putting in a hatch in the front to keep the lines pure. What is the best method for installing drain holes and plugs? I am ready to deck, but am waiting until I make this decision. By the way, I purchased the flush hatch kit. Why don't I see many photos of this arrangement? How watertight is this setup? Boy, did I love planing the shears!
