What's the safety issue with ear buds?

Maybe bluetooth (wireless) is your answer.

I agree with the others and would avoid speakers. you would probably really need to crank them to create the same sound quality that earbuds could give you.

any permanent speaker/battery installation on your boat would also have to be carefully done to ensure it could survive getting wet and is probably not worth the trouble.

i think some form of earbuds (with wires or wireless) is the best way to also get good sound quality that would be hard to match in a permanent installation without a lot of work and expense.
