This is a serious enough accident to warrant the attention of any open-water kayaker/canoeist. Hopefully, an inquest and/or police reqort will ensue, and we can learn whatever there is to be learned from the events as they are factualy presented in the report(s). The media may or may not have done a thorough job of reporting the different viewpoints.
Dead kids are one of life's ultimate tragedies and provoke a visceral response in anyone with any humanity. Otherwise Romeo and Juliet would not be such an enduring story. I don't think we should be ashamed of our emotional responses.
I really want to know what happened. It appears at this point that this accident was very preventable, and I want to learn how. I sometimes lead young folks out in the wilds and I do not want to lose any.
