Mark,
One diference with the Lightnings was noted by another poster with a much better memory than I: the wood Lightnings were plank-on-frame, rather than plywood, which, I presume, was heavier than molded plywood and, possibly, fiberglass.
I also built a molded plywood Moth and felt it as fast or faster than the glass models. 'Course, I was not the most talented sailor in our local fleets. There were boys, and a few girls, who could out-sail me in a bathtub with a bedsheet sail. The only thing I won consistently in was the old, cedar plank-on-frame sneakboxes. Not sure why, but my Dad was a crafty old sneak sailor and did show me a few tricks.
