the basic concept is before glueing any pieces together, take the surfaces that you will be glueing and give them a coat of unthickened epoxy.

this will soak into the wood a bit and "satisfy" the hunger of the wood to soak up epoxy. now, when you put the thickened glue on and join the pieces, the glue stays where you want and fills any gaps as opposed to being sucked into the what otherwise wood have been dry wood.

this makes for a nice strong joint with no surprizes.
