Digital zoom will always suck, even on modern cameras, because they are in effect conjuring something from nothing. They are inserting imaginary pixels between the ones that are actually there to make the image bigger. Based on the surrounding existing pixels they're generating a plausible but fictitious value for the new imaginary pixel. Some cameras have better interpolation algorithms than others, but it's always a guess. That's why it's so important to have optical zoom.
