varnishing

I've never varnished before, and I printed off posts by Steve Miller on painting and varnishing. I'm going to try that little white trim roller that you suggest. I can see the advantage of It on the hull being a large area with no obstructions. Do you still use the roller on the deck? Would you use a brush around the obstructions of the hatches, compass mount, coaming, and rub rails? Hard to figure how to go from dry to wet on these areas. Thanks a bunch.
