Give it a try! Nothin' to lose and it might just be great - in which case you let us know, and we'll be eternally greatful for the tip.

Kurt and the professional furniture builders have a zillion tricks in this area, but coloring wood- floured schmoo will work for sure, and you won't have to worry about introducing a new chemical into the equation.
