I think you could get it off with heat rather than a grinder. A heat gun held far enough away from the boat so you don't burn will heat the brass strip and the goo underneath quite quickly I think. Epoxy like we use for boats gets soft fast once it hits 140 degrees. If you have a scrap of the half oval you could do a test.
