I'll second Kurt's method, since he inspired me to try it on my WR18. My rubrails are 3/16"x3/4" ash with a scarf joint at the cockpit. I attached them after glassing the deck one at a time with lots of clamps and tape, no brads. Took mine right to the ends of the kayak. Mine are just epoxy sealed with varnish. Have only launched from a beach so they haven't rubbed on anything except the garage door getting in and out (d'oh). The tapers aren't so bad to do with a larger plane -- "just a few licks with the plane" as the saying goes.
