Doug, it doesn't have to be quite that cold...there are seals up and down California's coast in water temps up to the mid 60s (F). I was surfing in San Diego and nearly fell off my board because one wanted to be playful. He (she?) was less than 5 feet from me and just bobbing in the surf with the rest of us, diving and swimming under us etc. Really cool stuff.
