Basically, instead of screwing the deck beam in from the outside, I just wrapped it in Saran Wrap and secured it with two wood screws from the inside into the sheer clamp. I didn't fillet around the beam at all and the Saran Wrap prevented the deck from adhering to the beam.
Once the deck had been installed, glassed and epoxied, and I had the cockpit coaming built, I just unscrewed the deck beam and yanked it out. After that I put a couple layers of 4 oz. glass on the underside of the deck to help with any potential strength loss in that area (and give a backing to my soft padeyes).
