I used a router with an 1/8" bit and a quickly made jig to make the slots. Quick accuate and easy once the jig was made.

You must seal all exposed wood on a kayak with epoxy or it will stain and/or rot.

Using Joe's method of melting the wedding together to weld them into a loop, creates a full flange at the base of the loop. Joe's says he just silicones them in place and that is what I did. They do not leak.
