I like that idea to use bike cable. Some have a metal sleeve inside the plastic cover, and I wonder how that would do in the salt water.

Still, the bike cables could be an improvement and would be more resistant to crimping. Some (like the Shimanos) have a teflon lining for smoother shifting, probably overkill for rudder cables, but nice for a lazy person like myself.
