the wood is coated with epoxy, preventing direct contact with the water. A good varnish will provide UV protection to prevent the exopy from breaking down. Expect to re-varnish every few years or so, depending on the condition of the varnish.

Dont store a wooden kayak unshelterd outdoors (if you can), don't let water sit inside the kayak for extended periods of time, touch up any deep scratches promtly.

Either boat will degrade if left exposed to the UV rays all day, day after day. But with care both boats should last many years.
