Re: dark colour varnish

Charlie, as usual, probably has the best advice here. He has tons of experience - 'cause he's OLD.
I'd just like to add that a lot of UV Marine varnishes like Epifanes, are quite dark on their own after 3 or 4 coats, and darken even more as they age. I've worked a lot with Polyurathanes over the years (floors etc) and was really very suprised at how deep the Epifanes was.
One tip I'd advise is to try your concoctions inside the cockpit or hatches first where boo boos don't matter so much.
