If you keep working carefully with that scraper and careful sanding, you should be able to get the epoxy in good enough shape to welcome a coat of varnish. If you've never varnished before, wetting the sanded areas with water or mineral spirits will give you an idea of what that area will look like under four or so coats of varnish.

Hang in there.

Otherwise, go ahead and paint it. Lots of folks do. Paint is more durable than varnish, particularly if the boat is out in the sun a great deal. Maybe then just leave the combing, or the combing and hatches brite to show some wood.
