Cliff,

I ran into it when it was too late to do anything about it. My coaming ended up a little aft of the deck beam. You can sort of see this in the photo. I only got the thing in the water about six times before I partially dislocated my shoulder (on the way to kayaking, no less -- went anyway which was something of a mistake), but I have not noticed any excessive flexing or anything that would lead me to believe it will fail. Hope this helps.
