I was actually thinking of this very same possibility Mac.

My other option was to build a half-boatwidth box out of 3mm ply that is about 8" long, so approximately 8x10 inches. I figured this would add that much more support behind my cockpit for rescues as well as providing me a day hatch. I'll be doing a flush hatch like the rest of mine if I do this though...no vcp or screw tops for me.
