I have done it both ways
Posted by MWagar on Nov 8, 2004
When I built my solo strip canoe (Merlin) I used the cove and bead system. I really like it and one thing it has over "square" strips is when the boat is all done and you have it upside down on the car, the cove & bead boat looks tight and shows no gaps. When you look inside a canoe built without the c&b, you see gaps all over the place. This is a small thing that has no affect on strength or duability, but those gaps look rough sometimes. Having said that, this is not a problem with a kayak deck, you are never going to be inside to see the light shining through the little gaps. So, I didn't bother with the c&b on the strip deck of the West River 180.
