Kayak Storage

Posted by Robert Ruderman on Nov 7, 2004

Hi,

I am about to start building a second wooden kayak from a kit. In order to do so, I first need to clear out my garage which means moving my first wooden kayak outside. It is a large CLC double boat (about 21' in length).

I live in the Seattle area where the rain festival runs from January to December, and this causes me some concerns when storing the boat outdoors. Can anyone offer some ideas as to how I can store my kayak outside with an eye towards minimizing harm from the elements (moisture, mold, mildew, bugs, and other unforseen micro-organisms)? If I wrap the boat in a large tarp from Home Depot, would this be sufficient? Would I be better off with a "driveway tent"?

Many thanks for any responses, Robert Ruderman
