that solution seems to be one that keeps coming up. I've heard of some folks that have built more than one CLC kayak that they match the forward hatch ribs to the underside of the deck before assembling the hatch or trimming the curve a bit more. My preference for hatch closures are like the ones on the Arctic hawk using flush hatches. They don't require hand dexterity and strength to close, the fasteck buckles look like a nice application of a unique device but they weren't designed to close with maximum load for pressing things down.

If you look at the cross section of the plastic parts bearing the tension of closure it's about 1/8"x3/16" spread between two pieces. On aft decks where rescues can occur the straps require more tension for adequate down force than the front straps. I've had a Ch18 in classes used by 250#+ paddlers who have broken straps inadvertantly using them for handholds during rescues.
