One thing to consider is that the foam brace on the right drawing that isn't connected to the underside of the deck will tear out once a person settles into the kayak so a notch should be made for the sheer clamp and glued to the underside of the deck or velcro on top and sides. You don't need to notch out a slot for the back band as it will simply compress into the foam.
