Ray, stop just short of a true feathered edge, that's how. And if you do feather it all the way and a little bit pulls out, simply shrug your shoulders and remind yourself that you never claimed to be a professional woodworker, then get on with your life. :-)
Also, I believe you will find okoume to be much better behaved than cheapie plywood. That's one of the reasons we select it for this application.
