I use a 230, my wife a 220 in our Mill Creek. Both seem to work fine.

If you're strapped for cash, why not make two paddles. I've made a few that are servicable, fairly light, have curved blades and, get this, they even move the boat! Each one took about five hours to make, including finishing. I believe Cris. K. has plans in one of his books.
