Thanks. I designed the recess so, at the back coaming, it is dead flat from shear to shear. I did not modify the side panels at all. It lowered the rear coaming 3 1/2 inches on my standard Ches 17. The lower coaming helps any time I want to edge the kayak and when bracing and rolling. It also gives great support for the thighs on the underside of the deck, which is typically accomplished with the addition of knee pads or knee hooks. For straight paddling the recess really does not help at all. But when edging is used with a knee lift to correct for quartering waves good knee support is a big help.
