Re: new to boating

Where do you live? As you may know, small boat designs have evolved based on what has worked in an area for decades. That's why the native peoples in my area, Northern MN, favored canoes instead of kayaks. Easier to portage.

The best way to choose a boat design is to look to the waters in your area and see what other people are using. Does your area have a local rowing club or a college with a rowing team? Question these resources. Also, a kayak or canoe performs best when paddled. When one rows you are generally facing the stern, which is not an ideal position in a paddle craft. Without knowing your location, you might consider a rowing dory. The are used on both coasts, on rivers such as the Columbia, and on the Great Lakes.

Hope this helps.
