I use the keepers on my smaller, protected-water boats. Lighter, cheaper.

Yaks are more trustworthy, versatile and have those neat slots to clear most but not all of the sand out of the channels.

Some folks just move up the front bulkhead and skip the foot braces. Lots of carpentry if you want to adjust it, though. Seen a few kayaks with minicell glued onto the bulkhead for a nice, comfy foot bed. Made me want to don my old Hush Puppies and slip right in the cockpit.
