That's why I balance my kayak on the rudder when tipping it over to empty it, carry it by the rudder when it is loaded, use the rudder to save the kayak from rocks when in caves - fragile? Actually it and the mounting are the strongest parts of the kayak.

I fit a small transom that the gudgeon is screwed to with 2 horizontal and one vertical screws. The rudder has a "T" bar that it pivots on, horizontally and vertically. If you look for Navigator rudders you'll see they use our ideas.
