What Howard said plus a couple of suggestions. If you always store the kayak with the hatches off and the cockpit sponged out you'll reduce the greatest likelyhood of the "black ick" which is waterstaining through thin epoxy, puddled water, or water vapor steamed in closed compartments.

Capsizing is good, do it a lot. If you avoid capsizing you'll avoid learning necessary skills for kayaking.
