Thanks, Terry, that makes sense and probably explains it.

DJ, to satisfy my curiousity could you recheck your plans and instructions and verify that they indicate that the parts in question are designed oversive and must be cut to fit? At the moment it is unclear wheter there is an error in the plans and instructions or not. (Obviously, a new builder would not be able to guess that a given part is designed oversize or not. So if the plans and instructions don't indicate all oversize dimensions, and how to get the parts to fit correctly, then it is an error).
