Poplar revisited

Posted by RogerJ on Sep 16, 2004

I bought some wood listed as poplar from the local HD. Much of the wood in the area had the greenish tint often associated with Poplar. My intent is to use it for the bilge runners that protect/reinforce the wide bottom panel of my canoe. I figue it is harder than Pine and does split like Doug Fir (which I also tried). After cutting the curvature of the bottom and then the exposed portion of the runners I uncovered an area of black crumbly wood. This black wood looked as if it had been buened, but it was completely encased in clean clear wood. Could this be insect damage or rot, arborial desease of some kind? Your thought's.... RogerJ
