I also did a Ches LT 16 without nails or screws. One thing I did that was different was that I took a sheet of Okume and set it against a wall and let it "sag" and create some camber in it. I left it for about six months (I took about a year to build the boat). When I went to install the deck it took almost no effort to hold the deck in place. I used a bit of tape near the bow and two straps evenly spaced on the rest of each section. It worked out fine.
