Tom I didnt have any problems with the nails holding down the side decks on my 16.5. I nailed the outside and then used c clamps to hold the inside down, I did this in three operations (front deck) middle pieces (rear deck). The one thing I did do is cut and fit blocks between the shear rails and the coming rails. Made them out of 3/4 pine let them stick up above the rails and then planed sanded them to the same arc. Probabley overkill but made me feel more secure than the small plywood gussets clc sent.
