thx dave and mac (and others)! In the meantime, the fedex man dropped off an envelope of....YES! SCRAPERS!

If the Sharpie NEVER swims, I shall be forever grateful to this strange hobby for introducing me to a number of useful and simple tools.

I will visit the sites/try the sharpening methods mentioned, thanks. I already see that a cabinet scraper cuts a wider path than the carbide kind.
