McCloskey's Varnish

Uncle Ken, a wood restorer, was in San Diego and toured the tallship Star of India. While onboard he struck up a conversation with the man in charge of the ship's brightwork and found that he swears by McCloskey's red label varnish. I've been using Z-spar and like the nice golden color, but it pushes $30/quart. I've priced McCloskey's at $15-17. Anyone have experience with the product and care to comment on application, durability, UV filters, etc?
