tips for a new builder ?

I have recently got plans for a chesapeake 17. Before i put 'pen to ply' i wonder whether there are builders out there who have improved the materials used or design specs described in the manual. I have never built a kayak before - so am very keen to learn from others. Have you built a 17 and wish you had ...... If so i would love to hear from you.
