varnish and paint

I have a question and need an opinion.

Question: Can you paint with Brightsides Polyurethane over varnish?

Opinion: The Mill Creek cockpit, should it be bright or painted? My fillets are a bit ugly, there are multiple "owies" and I could snad forever and it would never get better.
