In whitewater my mantra was always too try 5 rolls before swimming, a 10 foot life jacket was better than a swim. On the way up I could grab some air if I thought about it, sometimes I knew I wouldn't come the whole way up, just enuf for air. The ability to take a breath and lock the airway with pressure from the diaphragm or whatever helps. However, when I practice rolling I note I am congested the next day.
