Oak doesn't take epoxy well, otherwise it would solve the splitting problem, as would most other hardwoods: White Ash, rock elm (very resistant to splitting), bigleaf (white) maple, sugar maple, sweet gum (must be epoxy-sealed), sour gum (black tupelo), hickory, black locust, etc. One sour gum log in particular back in Rose Tree, Pa. ate every wedge my brother and I ever pounded into it, never splitting, and in fact seeming to get hungrier for iron supplements with each feeding.

There are lots of other hardwoods that would be good. If epoxied, rot resistance is not a factor.
