I'm not Mauer, but here's a book I recommend. It discusses the various methods of joining wood for different furniture types. What stationary type of tools do you have? If you get into building more than basic furniture, you will find that at a minimum a tablesaw, jointer and planer are required to mill the wood for most projects.
