The "couple layers of ply" is what I used and it has worked well. Remember to allow a gap to place a sealing strip in, I had a 4mm thick deck so I used a 6mm spacer so I had room for the sealing strip.
I have posted a rough sketch of how I set things out below and there is also a link to my site that has a lot more info on it.
