Flush hatches are simple to build, and it is not only unnecessary, but (if not impossible) difficult to do before putting the deck on. Remember, Ross was doing his on a stripper.

The spacer and then a sill are glued in place, and the hatchcovers glued to braces that reproduce the radius of the deck. Underdeck attachments for lid and hull allow attachment of bungies. This is the readers digest version; let me know if you need more...
