I wouldn't call myself a wood expert, but I did make some storm-screens for my garage with some poplar just a few weeks ago. My impression -- it is a pretty hard wood and it is *heavy*. It holds paint well which is probably not something necessary for your intended application. Like other hard woods it take a bit of doing to get wood screws into it, again probably not a big deal. The green does make it sound like poplar -- there was quite a bit on a couple of my planks.
