fill the crack with epoxy thickened to mayonaise consistency with cabo-sil and maybe a bit of wood flour to match the colour if you are not painting.

make sure you push it well into the crack as it sounds like you cracked the end pour when you drove a nail into it. then, as you suggested, put a strip of fibreglass tape over the stem

assuming you also glass your deck after this...it should be plenty strong.
