3/8" wide x 4mm ply rings on deck around the hatch hole. 4mm strips underneath the hatch hole with fore/aft strips going sheer to sheer. For heavier paddler in wider kayak (Chesapeake 17LT)and rescues I'd add another 4mm strip on the forward edge and glass underside with 6oz cloth between bulkhead and hatch.
