Peter, My design only called for 2" tape and no glass in the cockpit. (I did both) I now think the tape wasn't necessary. Depending on the wear and tear you anticipate, you could go with the cloth only - if you're good at getting it into all the nooks and crannies smoothly - takes patience - don't rush. Also may depend on the thickness of your cloth - I'd go with heavier if eliminating the tape.
