Hi Larry,

I can't help you with the rudder question but the flush hatches are not difficult to do although I used the wood cut out of the deck to keep the matching grain of the top not a flush hatch kit.

I have a few photos of what I did on my site, the picture below is of the first rear hatch I did (unvarnished).
